HandmadeCarpets - Overview
Handmade carpets have so much better craftsmanship andartistic value than general machine woven, chemical fiber carpets. They aretraditional export products of China and are often known as “soft gold”.Handmade carpets have excellent patterns which are rich in content, strong inthree-dimensional sense, and the flowers and scenery are more like reliefs, notonly have high use value, but also have collection value and appreciationvalue, which made them well received by domestic and foreign customers for manyyears.The hand-made carpets are hand-woven with Australian or New Zealand woolor silk, and are made by more than ten traditional manual processes, such asweaving, flat, film, washing, casting and repairing. These carpets have tight,firm and solid structure. Handmade carpets pay most attention to the details,when weaving a peach flower, a dozen or even dozens of colors will be used topolish, there’s red in pink, pink in white, red in white, and the color of thesunny side of the pedals can be lighter, the color of the shaded area can bedeeper, the color covered by the other petals can be deeper, and the colorexposed outside can be lighter. These effects cannot be seen on machine-wovencarpets, and they highlight the artistic value of handmade carpets.
Handmade carpets can be classified by patterns: Persianpatterns, art patterns and geometric patterns; or by process: hand-woven (alsocalled oriental blanket) and hand-punched (rubber backing).
Persianpattern carpets are woven with wool and mulberry silk. They usually havepatterns of corners and dragons. The patterns are densely coloured and have astrong West Asia style. The overall feeling is graceful and elegant.
Theart pattern carpets are mainly based on processed real patterns such as animalsand plants, they are fresh and natural, soft and intimate, more in line withmodern cities’ pursuit of simple fashion.
Hand-wovenrugs are made of pure wool and silk, and are processed by dozens of processesincluding pattern design, color matching, dyeing, warp, hand knotting, flatblanket, rug, washing blanket, cutting, and trimming. The “hand knotting”processis to fix the warp yarns on the machine beam, and the hand-knitted wool yarnsis manually knotted and fixed on the warp yarns, and dozens of colors can beharmoniously combined. Handmade carpets have no limitation on the amount ofcolors, they have a high density and long hairs, and the finishing processgives them rich colors and strong stereoscopic effect. Such cumbersomeprocesses requires many months to even years to complete a carpet. But thetight and delicate carpet surface extends handmade carpets’ life to hundreds ofyears.
Hand-punchedcarpets are also made of pure wool and silk. And also require dozens ofprocesses, including pattern design, color matching, dyeing, hanging cloth,hand gunting, rubber coating, hanging cloth, flat blanket, blanket, washingblanket, flattening, trimming and etc. The workers will manually insert thecarpet pile yarn into a special tire cloth, and combining various color linesinto a beautiful pattern, then they will apply glue on the back of the carpet,attach the base fabric and hand-wrap it. Hand-punched carpets also have dozensof patterns and colors, but only require one or two months to make, however,their delicateness and life are worse than pure handmade carpets.
